Blackout as the nation's grid fails
- Major power facilities lost generating on Monday, causing the national grid to fail. Our correspondent's checks verified that the grid failed at approximately 3 p.m., leaving many Nigerians in the dark.
- According to information our correspondent acquired, power generation peaked earlier on Monday at over 4,800 megawatts before plummeting to 139MW as of 3pm.
- It was not immediately possible to determine the cause of the collapse. But it happened while the Nigerian Independent System Operator was trying to increase production in response to recent gas shortages brought on by pipeline vandalism.
All 22 grid-connected power plants had lost generation as of the time this report was filed.
However, neither the Federal Ministry of Power nor the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had released an official statement outlining the reason for the collapse or a precise timetable for the restoration of power supplies as of the time this article was filed.
